Caradon District Council Countryside and Sustainable Tourism Service
The
Service covers Caradon District in the South East of Cornwall, SW England. The
aim of the combined Countryside Services and the Sustainable Tourism Service is
to encourage the sustainable management of the coast and countryside of South
East Cornwall, whilst promoting and developing green tourism. The Service
supports two visitor centres in the District, the Discovery Centre in Looe which
has an exhibition, information service and a shop, and the Minions Heritage
Centre situated at the heart of both prehistoric and industrial archaeology on
Bodmin Moor.
The Sustainable
Tourism Officer promotes visitor management and green
tourism initiatives in the District. The objectives are to:
- improve information, interpretation and access to the
countryside,
- involve the local community in implementation,
- demonstrate the positive relationship between tourism and the
environment,
- ensure successful long term management of the
area.
Projects have included information
panels and pedestrian signposting schemes in Looe and Liskeard. The production
of cycling packs containing six family cycle rides in the area. Village and town
trail leaflets. Promotion of the Looe Valley Line, a rail service along the
picturesque Looe Valley. Public transport promotional leaflets, heritage
interest booklets and a leaflet service for local tourism
outlets.
The Countryside
Services are divided north and south to cover a very diverse
landscape and coastline. The rich variety of wildlife and habitat is reflected
in the high number of both statutory and non-statutory designations which serve
to protect the biodiversity of the District. The Officers work very closely with
local communities fulfilling the aims of Agenda 21, but are also highly
pro-active.
Main areas of work include
interpretation and a comprehensive programme of countryside events. Officers
ensure the sustainable management of land owned by the Council, and promote
opportunities for greater access to the countryside. Projects include the
conservation of local cultural heritage e.g. holy wells, stone hedges, Celtic
crosses, other archaeological monuments. The signing and interpretation of
Kilminorth Woods in Looe. The designation and interpretation of the Looe
Voluntary Marine Conservation Area. The creation of the Minions Heritage Centre
and extensive work with local schools.
In addition,
the Caradon Countryside Office is also the base for the
SUSTAIN Network, comprising local tourism
businesses who actively share information and promote sustainable
tourism.
