Land Use Planning and Management
The way in which land is divided and managed will become an increasing concern as the world's population grows. The challenge is to find appropriate mechanisms to integrate demands on the land from industrial, extractive, community, recreational, agricultural and conservation uses.
Objective: to deal with the multiple demands on land in an equitable manner, ensuring that development is not visually intrusive and contributes to conserving environment and culture while generating income
The following actions can be taken by Travel & Tourism companies:
- assess the potential environmental, cultural, social and economic impacts of new developments
- take measures to avoid negative impacts or minimise unavoidable impacts
- monitor the impacts of all new processes and procedures
- use local materials (from sustainably managed sources) and labour when constructing new facilities
- employ technologies and materials appropriate to local conditions in new developments and refurbishments
- work with regional and national authorities to ensure that adequate infrastructure is in place for new developments and refurbishments; this may include making provision for waste water treatment facilities or electricity supply within the development, or ensuring support for local craft industries
- involve the local community in major development decisions
- consider overall carrying capacity and resource constraints when developing new products, especially on small islands
- work with other sectors to ensure balanced and complementary development patterns
