Hazardous Substances
These can cause serious harm to health and the environment. Many products used in day-to-day Travel & Tourism operations can be hazardous if mishandled or disposed of improperly.
Objective: to replace products containing potentially hazardous substances with more environmentally benign products
Travel & Tourism companies should:
- examine the necessity for using products containing potentially hazardous substances, and where possible use more environmentally benign products
- assess the full environmental as well as financial implications of new products prior to purchase
- where environmentally benign alternatives do not exist, form partnerships with governments and manufacturers to develop them
- reduce use of products containing hazardous substances to the lowest possible quantity, and recycle or reuse any residue that can be captured
- dispose of unavoidable wastes responsibly
- set up inventories and storage procedures to guard against thefts/accidents
- ensure all appropriate staff are trained in the handling of hazardous substances and in emergency procedures
- start routine emissions of toxic substances to the environment as part of a 'right to know' programme for employees and host communities
- transfer benign technologies and know-how to developing countries
