The Hotel Jardim Atlántico is situated 480m above sea level on the west coast of Madeira with a spectacular view over the fishing villages of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar. The Hotel has an extensive environmental programme with a particularly impressive ?no waste? campaign for guests and staff.

Waste minimisation at Hotel Jardim Atlántico
  • No food is served in individually packaged portions (e.g. butter and conserves)
  • Dry foods such as cereal are purchased in large packets
  • Use returnable bottles where possible
  • Re-use of office stationery and purchase of recycled paper
  • Most fresh food is purchased from local farmers and packaging crates are returned to them to be used again
  • Created own compost for all kitchen and garden waste. The compost is called rotte which is used as a garden fertiliser
  • Old/worn linen is re-used as cleaning cloths
  • Fund-raising campaign for guests to discard of unwanted clothes which are donated to local villagers
  • Kitchen waste used as pig swill
