Three steps onto certification

CompaniesCommunities
Step 1

Entry & Commitment

Any Travel & Tourism Company can become a Green Globe 21 member.

Green Globe 21 will provide information, analysis and advice on ways to achieve sustainable tourism development. After 6 months companies must decide whether to enter the formal certification process based on Agenda 21 for Travel & Tourism. Those electing not to pursue certification must leave the program at the end of the year.

Those pursuing certification can use the Green Globe 21 logo.

Any locality, city or region can become a Green Globe 21 destination.

Green Globe 21 will facilitate a tourism environmental impact assessment, establish a multi-stakeholder group to assess challenges/recommend solutions and prepare a strategic sustainable development tourism action plan and certification proposal identifying and costing actions needed to achieve sustainable development based on Agenda 21 principles.

Those pursuing certification can use the Green Globe 21 logo.

Step 2

Environment Management System

Certification is based on an ISO type standard incorporating Agenda 21 principles.

This is supplemented by application criteria for different industry sectors - accommodation, tour operators, attractions etc., and different local cultures and environments. These are developed with the Australian Government established Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism and reviewed by an International Advisory Council of Industry, Government and NGO experts.

Companies will receive assistance in developing environmental management systems, as well as setting and meeting targets from qualified Green Globe 21 Consultancy Partners.
Certification is based on a systematic process incorporating Agenda 21 for Travel & Tourism.

It involves the multistakeholder group and includes the detailed breakdown of each componenet of the certification proposal, the establishment of targets and implementation of necessary action.

It also includes identification and pursuit of financing means.

Companies will receive assistance in developing systems, as well as setting and meeting targets from qualified Green Globe 21 Consultancy Partners.

Independent Verification

The Green Globe 21 certification process has been developed in cooperation with Societe General de Surveillance (SGS) - a leading international verification body.

SGS and other such organisations work with Green Globe 21 to define implementation procedures as well as undertaking overall final verification that targets have been met. Regular audits to certify compliance with standards are undertaken.

Once verification is finalised the company is entitled to use the Green Globe 21 certification logo with its distinctive tick.
